Our History

Established in 1990, Breastfeeding Hawaii began its journey as The Breastfeeding Promotion Council of Hawaii, a journal club for lactation consultants.

Today, Breastfeeding Hawaii has grown into a federally recognized 501(c)(3) organization and is the state affiliate of the United States Breastfeeding Committee (USBC).

Our Vision

The State of Hawaii perceives breastfeeding as the optimal way to nourish and nurture our children.

Our Mission

To protect, promote and support breastfeeding through the education of and collaboration with professionals involved in maternal-child health, and serve as a community breastfeeding advocate in the State of Hawaii.

In Memorium

Dr. Sylvia Pager
1939 - 2015

Dr. Sylvia Pager was a passionate protector, promoter, and supporter of breastfeeding families in Hawaii. She was the first International Board Certified Lactation Consultant physician in our state and a founding mother and board member of Breastfeeding Hawaii. She served on the Breastfeeding Hawaii board until her passing, and had previously served concurrently on the board of Hawaii Mothers’ Milk. She was also a Fellow of the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine and the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Sylvia was active at the legislature helping to pass laws on Breastfeeding in Public and Breastfeeding in the Workplace. On the day she fell ill, she had just testified at the Capitol in support of the Paid Family Leave bill. Her family, patients and colleagues will all miss her enthusiasm for life and wonderful loving personality! She will be remembered and celebrated for her years of service and dedication. We are honored to ensure that her legacy lives on through Breastfeeding Hawaii’s community outreach, advocacy and education to protect, promote, and support breastfeeding in the State of Hawaii.
